Core Facilities provide the scientists with the "raw material"
for research and testing:

Recombinant DNA Laboratory (RDL) -offers a variety of technical services designed to benefit and enhance research programs at the University of Texas Medical Branch
Genomics Core - provide UTMB researchers access to cutting-edge technologies in functional genomics. The core currently supplies both Affymetrix gene chips and custom microarrays.
Synthetic Organic Core Laboratory (SOCCL) - is a full service custom organic synthesis laboratory resource for UTMB researchers providing synthesis of commercially unavailable modified nucleosides, oligonucleotides, modified peptides, bioconjugates, natural products, biomolecular compounds, enzyme substrates, intermediates and other small organic molecules as tools for biomedical research.

These facilities allow SCMS researchers to devote more time to the business at hand - conducting the pathbreaking work that will lead to real discovery. The Core Facilities also provide other UTMB medical researchers with support services for their research, assisting with recombinant techniques, generating molecular samples upon which to perform tests, and providing visualization tools that allow researchers to explore their results.
